Frequently Asked Questions
Who are you guys?
Part of the ARChive of Contemporary Music, the New York Musicians Index and Archive (NYMIA) is a freely available online relational database designed to provide information about and access to all aspects of the New York-based music industry. Funding for the NYMIA is made possible through a Rockefeller-administered New York State Music Fund grant.
How can the NYMIA help my career?
Through the NYMIA, you can build a network of contacts and links relevant to what you do. In building your network, you can search for and link to arts organizations, granting agencies, festivals, genre-appropriate venues, instrument builders and repair shops, aggregators, record companies, publishers, rights organizations, legal aid, health services, sales outlets and so forth - in short, the full range of music related goods and resources found throughout the state, much of which isn’t widely publicized.
Can I be a part of the NYMIA?
Absolutely! If you are a musician, scholar, administrator or a service or business that can help musicians create, maintain and distribute their art, and you are based in New York State, you are welcome to join.
Does it cost anything to join?
No.
Wait, I’m already listed! Who wrote all that info about me?
Our staff has been diligent in cataloging the various facets of New York State’s music industry, so it is indeed likely you are already listed. We have collected this information from public sources (usually, your own website) and have done our best to ensure its accuracy.
The information that you have about me is wrong. Also, I want to keep some of the information you have private. Can I fix this?
Not a problem - you are the final arbiter of what information people see. To edit your entry, you must have a profile. Once your profile is created, you will have the ability to edit your own contact information and to choose which of that information you want public. You will also have the option of uploading a personal avatar and/or a business logo. Because you have direct control over your own display options, they can be changed at at any time.
Do people have to join to use the site?
No. Anyone is free to use the site’s search function.
How can I best ensure that the person doing a search for a business/band like mine finds me through the NYMIA?
By making sure your band/business is properly categorized. When you go to create or edit your profile, you will find several drop-down bars marked Business Type and Genre. These should be set to accurately reflect who it is you are and what it is you do. On that page you will also find a field marked Notes in which you are given 100 words or less to describe what it is that you. In writing this, be precise and try to use words you think people might use in a search - it will help lead people to you.
Will you sell my information?
We will not sell, share, or knowingly release our database, nor will we release information you wish to remain private, to anyone. Please be aware, however, that all information you choose to make public through the NYMIA is public and therefore freely available to anyone who accesses the site.
May I put a link to the NYMIA on my Web site?
You are welcome to link to the New York Musicians Index and Archive Web site. (We encourage it!) Please feel free to also link to any pages within the site. However, links to these pages may change at any time and without notice. If you do link to pages within the NYMIA site, please keeping track of any changes that arise.
How can my business advertise on the NYMIA?
Although we sometimes post links to organizations with whom we partner, and maybe to some we like, the NYMIA’s site includes no paid advertising.
I need to talk to someone on the ARChive’s board about recording my song. Can you help me?
The NYMIA exists to facilitate the everyday business of music-making. We do not provide artist referrals and will not distribute contact information about anyone not listed on this site.
I do all my business in New York, but I live in New Jersey/Connecticut/Pennsylvania/Vermont/Ontario. Can I join the NYMIA?
At this time, the NYMIA is open only to those with an address in New York State.
Will the NYMIA ever contact me?
Generally, no. However, on occasion you may receive email from the NYMIA/ARChive of Contemporary music about important events (like the ARC’s biannual record sale) and changes to the site you should be aware of.
